FULLER, Ernest J.

No. 14600, Corporal, Ernest Jude FULLER
Aged 26

1st/1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment
Killed in Action on Thursday, 22nd August 1918

There are many confusing details for this man both in and out of the Army and more research is required

Ernest Jude Fuller was born in 1893 according to census details, 1892 according to CWGC ( who have his mother as Mrs Annie Fuller of Bury St Edmunds). "Soldiers Died" has him as 14600 Cpl Ernest Jude Fuller, Cambridgeshire Regiment, born in Freckenham. "Soldiers Personal Effects also has him in Cambridgeshires and mother Annie.

1891 census Grandfather Frederick [50], grandmother Sarah Ann[56] and their daughter Annie [15] were in Freckenham.

1901 censusAged 8, Ernest is in Freckenham with his grandparents.

1911 census In Freckenham, aged 18, with his grandparents and Annie FULLER ,single, aged 35.

Neither his mother nor father can be identified from a census, unless the Annie Fuller in the 1891 and 1911 census in Freckenham with his grandparents is his mother and not his single aunt. There are no birth registrations on record for an illegitimate Ernest Fuller in 1891-1895

The pension card is not much help, giving his mother as Mrs Fuller of Drift Road, Freckenham, and another address (presumably his grandfather) Frederick Nathan FULLER at The Hopleys, Horringer.

He enlisted in Newmarket. The 1st/1st Cambridgeshire were a territorial force who arrived at Le Havre in 1915. On May 9th 1918 they were transferred to the 35th Brigade in the 12th (Eastern) Division and absorbed more than 400 men from the 7th Suffolks. There is some confusion here as the medal index roll shows a Suffolk Regiment corporal Ernest J Fuller with number 14600 but dying on 28th August and no mention of the Cambridgeshires. Another medal index card shows an Ernest Fuller transferring from the Suffolks to the 1st/1stCambridgeshire but that man has a number 8644 and no such man appears to have died during the war. There is no medal card for an Ernest J Fuller in the Cambridgeshires, only Ernest William Fuller No 8644, a regular soldier.

The battalion had 47 killed on the 22nd August, only seven have no known grave, they are commemorated on the Vis en Artois Memorial

This medal index card has his number and rank, albeit the date of death is now 28th August and it is solely for the Suffolk Regiment.
